Life has a way of knocking us down — sometimes gently, sometimes brutally. For someone living with epilepsy, setbacks are not just possible; they are inevitable. Seizures, injuries, fear, uncertainty — they all create moments when it feels impossible to keep moving forward. But I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about avoiding the fall; it’s about how you rise after each one.

I’ve faced countless setbacks. I’ve fractured my cheekbone, dislocated my shoulder, cracked bones in my hands, and fallen through fences. Each of these events was painful, frightening, and at times, overwhelming. But with each setback, I discovered something crucial: the human spirit is stronger than we often realize. You can endure more than you think, recover more than you expect, and grow more than you imagined possible.

Resilience isn’t instantaneous. It doesn’t appear magically after a seizure or an injury. It is built slowly, through repeated experiences of getting back up when the world seems to push you down. For me, it has been waking up after a seizure, feeling the physical and emotional aftermath, and choosing to keep going. It has been rebuilding my confidence after injuries that made me feel fragile. It has been continuing to pursue my dreams, despite knowing the next seizure could change everything in an instant.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that resilience is a mindset. It is the belief that even when life feels impossible, you are capable of moving forward. It is the determination to keep standing, no matter how many times you fall. And it is the courage to embrace your vulnerability while refusing to be defined by it.

Resilience also comes from connection and support. Leaning on friends, family, and the community I’ve built through My Epilepsy Journey has been essential. Sharing my experiences, receiving encouragement, and knowing that I am not alone has made it easier to face the challenges of living with epilepsy. Strength grows not only from within but also from those who walk beside you.

Today, resilience means more than just surviving. It means living with purpose. It means turning pain into lessons, fear into motivation, and setbacks into opportunities for growth. Every time I rise after a fall, I reinforce the truth that life’s challenges cannot define me — only my response to them can.

If there’s one thing I want you to take away, it’s this: no matter how many times life knocks you down, you can stand again. Each setback is an opportunity to discover strength you didn’t know you had. Every fall is a chapter in your story of resilience. And when you rise, you don’t just survive — you thrive.
