RISE stands for Resilience, Identity, Support, and Empowerment—four pillars that together create a foundation for overcoming adversity.
R – Resilience
Resilience is the inner strength that helps us bounce back from setbacks. For someone with epilepsy, this might mean picking yourself up after a seizure, continuing with treatment after a tough side effect, or pushing forward after being misunderstood or excluded. Resilience doesn’t mean ignoring the pain or pretending everything is fine—it means honoring your struggle while refusing to let it define your limits. Building resilience involves practicing self-compassion, maintaining hope, and developing strategies to cope with stress and fear. It’s about showing up, day after day, even when it’s hard.
I – Identity
When you live with a chronic condition like epilepsy, it’s easy for that diagnosis to overshadow who you are. But your identity is far more than your medical condition. RISE encourages you to embrace your whole self—your passions, your strengths, your quirks, and your values. Recognizing epilepsy as just one part of your story, not the whole, helps rebuild self-worth and purpose. By claiming your identity, you can shift the narrative from “I am sick” to “I am strong, capable, and unique—and I happen to have epilepsy.”
S – Support
You don’t have to do this alone. Support is essential when managing a disability. Whether it’s from family, friends, healthcare professionals, support groups, or online communities, the presence of people who understand or are willing to learn can make a world of difference. Support provides emotional safety, practical help, and encouragement. For epilepsy in particular, trusted allies can help respond in emergencies and advocate for safer, more inclusive environments. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness—it’s a declaration that you deserve help and connection.
E – Empowerment
Empowerment is the process of reclaiming control over your life. It’s about making informed decisions about your health, setting goals, and advocating for your needs. With epilepsy, empowerment might look like learning your triggers, being open with your employer about accommodations, or helping to raise awareness in your community. When you live in empowerment, you move from surviving to thriving. You stop asking “Why me?” and start asking “What can I do with this experience?”
The RISE method is not a quick fix—it’s a daily practice of resilience, identity, support, and empowerment. For individuals living with epilepsy or any disability, it offers hope and structure on the road to living a life filled with meaning, dignity, and joy. You are more than your diagnosis. You have a future, and you have the strength to rise.
